Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director, SHS Operations, led by the Senior Lead Nurse, and according to established protocol or direction of a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner, the Medical Assistant (MA) performs a variety of skilled Medical Assistant duties and gives direct nursing care to students in the Student Health Center.

Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

The salary range for this classification is $24.05 to $30.50 per hour.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate is a reliable team player with strong oral communication skills who can work well with others in a respectful and professional manner. They should be able to understand basic medical terminology, follow clinic procedures, and stay within the Medical Assistant scope of practice as defined by the Medical Board of California. Attention to detail is key for maintaining accurate medical records, and they must be able to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and SHS policies is essential, along with the ability to use sound judgment and consult with clinicians when needed. The candidate should be comfortable using computers, especially for health information systems, and be able to learn new equipment and procedures quickly. Most importantly, they should be committed to creating cooperative relationships with students, clinicians, and coworkers in a campus-based setting.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a high school diploma required.

• One year of experience performing the duties of a medical assistant in an outpatient clinic preferred.

Physical Summary

Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
