Position Summary

The SSPIII position under the general supervision of the department chair(s) serves in the role of the Clinical Placement Coordinator in the Departments of Secondary and Elementary Education. The role includes several related, but distinct areas that include student fieldwork placement, student teacher advising, intern teacher advising, university supervisor training and assignment, and school district liaison. The work is essential to the success of each student’s preparation, and involves building positive working relationships with individual students, university faculty/staff, and school and district level administrators across multiple organizational lines. The Clinical Placement Coordinator also has an important role in ensuring that the credential programs meet the standards of the CTC for clinical practice, and supports accreditation activities. The Clinical Placement Coordinator maintains accurate records and generates annual reports for the dean and chairs.

Position Information

CLINICAL PLACEMENT OPERATIONS

Meeting Commission on Teacher Credentialing Standards for Clinical Practice

• Use a good working knowledge of CTC standards for clinical practice in each program (Multiple and Single Subjects, Bilingual Authorization, PK-3, and Common Standards);
• Work with chair, faculty, and deans to ensure that all standards for clinical practice are consistently met.
• Support CTC accreditation reporting and site visits.

District and School Relationships

• Develop and maintain positive working relationships and open communication with district personnel responsible for supporting student teachers and interns;
• Follow district protocols for identifying cooperating teachers;
• Attend district meetings as needed;
• Visit classrooms, schools, and district offices to become familiar with those contexts and to strengthen relationships with those personnel;
• At all time, represent the Graduate College of Education and SFSU with professionalism, positive approach, and reliable follow-through.

Working with Departments and College

• Serves as the primary point of contact for student teaching placements and intern support;
• Works with the Dean’s Office to ensure that necessary MOUs are current;
• Attends department and college meetings;
• Develops positive and effective working relationships with department faculty and chairs;
• Supports the department office when needed;
• Works in person onsite to support students, chair, and faculty (follow college guidelines)

CLINICAL PLACEMENTS: STUDENT TEACHERS, INTERNS, SUPERVISION, COOPERATING TEACHERS

Oversight of Clinical Placement Database, Candidate Eligibility List, and Documents

• Maintains accurate records in a shared database that is updated regularly;
• In collaboration with chairs and faculty, identifies candidates who are eligible for student teaching or fieldwork and updates the database accordingly;
• Regularly updates the shared database to include cooperating teachers, fieldwork supervisors, and district mentors (for Interns);
• Generates reports every semester for the chairs and dean summarizing clinical placements.
• Distributes forms for use by university supervisors and cooperating teachers for observations and evaluation;
• Monitors, collects, and stores all supervision observation forms from university supervisors and cooperating teachers;
• Facilitates the review of evaluation forms with chair and faculty;
• Updates the Student Teaching Handbook, Cooperating Teacher Handbook, and University Supervisor Handbook online annually.

Identifying and Onboarding Cooperating Teachers for Each Program

• In collaboration with districts, identify cooperating teachers for student teacher placements in each program;
• Ensure that each cooperating teacher meets minimum CTC standards for participation;
• Match student teachers with cooperating teaching using department protocols;
• Communicate with cooperating teachers and student teachers to confirm student teacher placements;
• Organizing cooperating teacher orientation and training prior to student teacher arrival in their classroom;
• In collaboration with chairs and faculty, coordinate the 2-10 hour training required for new cooperating teachers, and maintain a record of training for all cooperating teachers.

Identifying and Confirming Clinical Placements and Supporting Student Teachers

• In collaboration with chair, confirm student teacher eligibility for student teaching and finalize the list of eligible student teachers prior to the start of each semester;
• Match each student teacher with the appropriate cooperating teacher following the department protocols and supporting student needs where possible;
• Confirm this match in writing to the student teacher, cooperating teacher, and district liaison, and update the shared database accordingly;
• In collaboration with chair and faculty, prepare student teachers for their placements; share the Handbook and other information to ensure that they know how to start successfully on Day 1;
• Support student teachers to complete any district paperwork or process required; update district-required databases as needed;
• Work with chairs to ensure thorough advising for student teachers prior to and during their fieldwork;
• Confirm with each student teacher that they have started their clinical placement as directed;
• Promptly and proactively address student teaching issues as they arise, collaborating with cooperating teacher, university supervisor, principal, and chair as needed;
• If a change in student teacher placement is needed, confirm action plan with chair and make any changes with support for the student teacher as a priority, while adhering to district protocols and requests.

Onboarding Interns with Supervision and Support

• Confirm offer of employment for incoming interns;
• Confirm with Dean’s Office that Intern MOUs are current for each intern’s district;
• Support interns in preparing documents for Intern Credential application;
• In collaboration with chair, assign university supervisors to interns following department protocol;
• Confirm district supervision assignments for each intern and update shared database.

University Supervisor Assignment and Training

• In collaboration with the chairs, identify the university supervisors available each semester and eligible for employment as Lecturer Faculty (considering entitlement) and the number of student teachers they can supervise;
• In collaboration with the chair, match university supervisors with student teachers and schools sites by Census date each semester, keeping travel proximity in mind, and ensuring that supervisors have the appropriate credential for the student teacher placement they are supervising;
• Organize a University Supervisor meeting at the start of each semester, and in collaboration with the chair, provide program information and facilitate learning about coaching, feedback, forms, and protocols for visits onsite and online

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following knowledge and abilities are required for appointment into this classification.

• Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior applicable to student teaching placement coordination.
• General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of placing student teachers;
• General knowledge of individual counseling or advising techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the Elementary and Secondary Education Departments.
• Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
• Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action;
• Carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of

• Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work or related experience.
• One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
• A master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
• A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years or more experience in PK-12 school settings or student services with knowledge of school systems, teaching and/or school/district administration;
• Strong written, listening, and speaking communication skills, affirmed by references;
• Excellent organizational and analytical skills as demonstrated through effective planning, use of spreadsheets and databases, follow-through, and timely completion of assignments or projects;
• Ability to quickly learn and implement CTC standards, department and college protocols, and SFSU platforms and systems;
• Experience in training and/or making presentations to professional audiences;
• Positive and self-directed approach to work, demonstrated through letters and references;
• Facility with Microsoft Office Suite
• Teaching credential and teaching experience in PK-12 public schools, preferably Bay Area;
• Familiarity with Commission on Teacher Credentialing standards;
• Experience teaching in educator preparation programs
