DEFINITION:
Provides administrative supervision to a large group of Physician Assistants who perform medical examinations, procedures, and treatments under the technical supervision of physicians.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class provide first-level administrative supervision to a large group of Physician Assistants and trainees. These positions are found within large and complex medical divisions in a hospital or comprehensive health centers. Incumbents utilize knowledge of basic supervision principles as well as medical techniques in various medical specialties such as emergency care, primary care, women's health care, and orthopedics. These positions may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time and lift heavy equipment while providing medical services to the patient.
Essential Job Functions- Serves as first line administrative supervisor for a group of Physician Assistants under the technical direction of a physician.
- Prepares performance evaluations for the Physician Assistant staff.
- Makes recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, and transfers as well as progressive disciplinary measures to impose involving subordinate Physician Assistants and trainees.
- Conducts staff meetings as needed to ensure that administrative and medical treatment policies and procedures are clearly understood and applied.
- Reviews the quality of completed and pending assignments and implements corrective measures where necessary.
- Develops and revises proposed Physician Assistant programs in response to identified training needs, review of patient records, and changes in professional standards and practices.
- Assists in supervising and evaluating clinical performance of the Physician Assistants assigned to various specialty areas.
- Serves as a resource person to the Physician Assistants for unusual or difficult cases and demonstrates appropriate evaluation and treatment procedures.
- Assists in the clinical training of students and orientation of allied health team by providing training and evaluating their performance.
- Coordinates staff development through in-service training, offsite conferences, seminars, or college courses.
Requirements SELECTION REQUIREMENTS :
Two years of experience as a Physician Assistant in the applicable specialty role(s):
- Physician Assistant, Emergency Care OR
- Physician Assistant, Primary Care OR
- Physician Assistant, Women's Health Care OR
- Physician Assistant, Orthopedics OR
- Physician Assistant, Surgery
LICENSE:
A valid license to practice as a Physician Assistant* issued by the Physician Assistant Board of California.
CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Hearth Association -
OR- a Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate (BCLS) issued by an approved provider.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Master's Degree from an accredited university** in Public Health Science, Biology, Human Anatomy, Physiology or Physician Assistant studies.
- Additional years of experience as a Physician Assistant beyond the Selection Requirements.
PHYSICAL CLASS III - Moderate:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special requirement information:
- *Experience working as a Physician Assistant in the County of Los Angeles means working under a physician's supervision. It involves performing medical examinations, selected diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, and special procedures to help deliver medical services to patients
- Applicants must include a clear photocopy of their credential authorizing them to work as a Physician Assistant including certificates such as the BLS or BCLS.
- ** To receive credit for education listed under the Desirable Qualifications, applicants should submit a legible copy of their official diploma, official transcript, or letter/certificate from an accredited institution within seven (7) days of filing your application. The document should show the date the degree was conferred. Candidate's will need to achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list. ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION : Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies throughout the Los Angeles Health Services as they occur.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.Special Information:Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
