DescriptionUnder direct supervision, prepares and positions patients for a variety of medical imaging procedures ranging from routine diagnostic x-rays to highly-specialized diagnostic tests and the operational network management of the acquisition and electronic archiving of all modality image studies to produce diagnostic images for interpretation by a Radiologist.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Medical Imaging Specialist I is the entry, training level of the Medical Imaging Specialist series and will possess the necessary certifications, licenses and experience to perform the duties in their specialized functional area -or- will obtain the necessary certifications, licenses, and experience within one (1) year of transfer from another specialized function work area. This level will assist in training student interns.
The Medical Imaging Specialist II is the journey level in the series performing duties more independently in their respective specialty areas. Medical Imaging Specialist II will also assist in the training of student technologists and other imaging staff members within different modalities.
The ideal candidate will be a compassionate and detail-oriented Mammography Technologist with experience preparing and positioning patients for mammography procedures in accordance with established imaging protocols. They will possess thorough knowledge of breast imaging techniques, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, radiation safety principles, and the unique needs of adult patients undergoing breast imaging exams. The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in operating mammography equipment, producing high-quality diagnostic images for interpretation by Radiologists, and accurately documenting and processing exams through radiology and electronic medical record systems. They will maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations, billing documentation requirements, and quality assurance standards while providing exceptional patient care, professionalism, and sensitivity throughout the imaging experience.
APPROXIMATE SALARIES:Medical Imaging Specialist I: $46.28 - $60.70 Hourly
Medical Imaging Specialist II: $51.06 - $62.07 Hourly
EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

Medical Imaging Specialist I/II is represented by the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies
for this position only, There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy.
NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Examples Of DutiesDuties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepares and positions patients for examination according to approved modality protocols;
- Operates various portable and stationary imaging equipment throughout the hospital to obtain images for diagnostic interpretation by Radiologists;
- Completes the billing process for each patient encounter utilizing all Radiology department electronic systems and the hospital electronic medical record system;
- Transports patients to and from the imaging departments when necessary;
- Assists with training and instruction of lower-level department incumbents in same modalities; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
Typical QualificationsThese are entrance requirements to the exam process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: - Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related; OR
- Graduation from a program accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology; OR
- Bachelor’s degree in sonography or vascular technology; OR
- Bachelor’s degree in any major and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience. (NOTE: this experience cannot be used to satisfy the experience required below). OR
AND
One (1) year (Medical Imaging Specialist I) or two (2) years (Medical Imaging Specialist II) of experience performing the duties in:
- X-Ray/Fluoroscopy
- Mammography
Necessary Special Requirements: - All specialty areas require CPR certification.
DESIRED: Completion of Mammography specific program with current ARRT certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of:
- Anatomy, physiology, physics and medical terminology as it relates to each imaging modality.
- Exam specific requirements when imaging neonates, pediatric and adult patients
- Adherence to HIPAA regulations
- Documentation required for exam billing processes
- General imaging patient care practices/operations utilized in a hospital setting
Skill in:
- Positioning patients for image acquisition
- Shielding patients per ALARA
- Recognizing and evaluating projected images for clarity, content and scope of examination
Demonstrated ability to:
- Perform routing and complex and/or specialty imaging services studies to include measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and detailed anatomical statistics
- Proficiently perform exams requiring sterile field set-up and maintenance.
- Exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity and respect when explaining procedures to patients.
- Provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation
- Assist with training student interns
- Establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
