GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Outdoor Education Supervisor for Texas State Parks, the Regional Texas Outdoor Family (TOF) Lead will perform routine (journey-level) administrative and supervisory program work and serve as lead instructor for overnight camping workshops to promote the use of State Parks to new visitors. Responsible for organizing, conducting, and evaluating TOF workshops within Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area State Parks. Serves as a community contact and recruiter between State Parks and DFW area partner organizations. Responsible for continuing existing and developing new relationships with TOF community partners who serve new audiences. This includes conducting outdoor leadership trainings to prepare group leaders/volunteers to lead overnight camping and outdoor education experiences modeled after TOF best practices. Management of partner events includes scheduling and shuffling gear between parks, the pursuit of payment and participant data, and communication with staff, parks, and partners. Responsible for marketing and promoting Texas State Park programs to develop strategic partnerships with populations of north Texas and helping maintain social media presence. Will supervise assistant instructor positions that help fulfill the duties of program hosting, partnership building, outreach, and gear management. Occasionally supervises interns/volunteers/ambassadors to assist in facilitating gear maintenance and outdoor education events. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

Two years experience conducting instructional or educational programs.

Licensure:

Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a class "C" Texas driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Education:

One additional year of the required experience conducting instructional or educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 60 semester hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in one of the following areas: Park Administration, Recreation and Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Sociology, Sports Management or a closely related field.

Experience:

Experience leading or supporting Texas Outdoor Family programs;

Experience managing large groups of people in outdoor settings with a focus on participants safety and enjoyment, as well as "Leave No Trace" ethics;

Experience conducting outdoor education programs in areas such as camping, fishing, hiking, kayaking, geocaching, biking, outdoor cooking, or related activities;

Experience towing trailers and backing them into tight spaces;

Work experience in outdoor settings such as parks, refuges, wildlife management areas, nature centers, camps, or similar;

Work experience to include the management of event planning with points of contact or partners.

Language:

Ability to read, write, and speak in English and Spanish languages.

Licensure:

Current Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) from the National Association of Interpretation (NAI);

Current Leave No Trace Instructor;

Current American Canoe Association Kayak Instructor certification;

Current Wilderness First Aid or Responder;

Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification.

Skill in supervising, scheduling, training, and evaluating staff or volunteers;

Skill in approaching an unfamiliar audience and recruiting their interest in your program's offering;

Skill in managing groups and group safety in outdoor settings;

Skill in identifying measures or indicators of program and staff performance;

Ability to work with all constituencies and populations;

Ability to work well with all groups and age ranges;

Ability to develop and maintain beneficial relationships with civic groups, volunteers, community members, and staff;

Ability to maintain revenue collection expectations with partner groups and purchasing to maintain the vehicle and equipment fleet for the needs of TOF programming;

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

Ability to work as a member of a team;

Ability to conduct marketing and outreach efforts to promote the program;

Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts;

Ability to establish goals and objectives;

Ability to devise solutions to administrative problems;

Ability to develop, evaluate, and interpret administrative policies and procedures;

Ability to supervise the work of others;

Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use;

Required to stay/lodge in tents at State Parks during weekends, as necessary;

Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays;

For shifts exceeding 24 hours such as weekend camping workshops, all time will be paid except for meal breaks and sleep periods, excluding work-related interruptions;

Required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 40% with possible overnight stays;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety standards;

Non-smoking work environment in State buildings and vehicles.
