A fully trained journey level classification for professional law enforcement work. Incumbents perform a wide range of law enforcement assignments, including patrolling, investigating incidents, serving as bailiff, and more. Reports to a Sheriff Sergeant with no classifications supervised.

Examples of duties include patrolling assigned areas, conducting preliminary investigations, interrogating witnesses, gathering evidence, serving warrants, making arrests, and preparing detailed reports.

Knowledge of modern law enforcement methods, laws of apprehension, rules of evidence, and use of firearms is required. Ability to perform a wide variety of professional law enforcement work, understand and interpret laws, and represent the Sheriff's Department effectively.

Training and experience in law enforcement work is highly desirable. Completion of education and background to meet P.O.S.T. certification requirements is mandatory.
