PARAEDUCATOR (SUBSTITUTE)
Description
Basic FunctionUnder general supervision, to perform a variety of instructional support duties involved in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in a classroom; and to perform a variety of clerical duties as assigned.
Essential FunctionsAssist with the preparation of instructional materials; assist in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials.
Assist with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises for students; assist in the conduct of lessons and other classroom activities; prepare for and assist with various classroom projects; clean up after classroom projects.
Observe and manage behavior of students according to approved procedures; assist in maintaining order among the children in the classroom and on the school grounds; supervise students as assigned in the classroom, playground, cafeteria, or while on field trips; accompany students going from one location to another.
Perform a variety of clerical duties including recording attendance and grades, maintaining records and files.
Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, and exhibits, operating audiovisual equipment and educational training equipment, distributing and collecting papers and supplies, preparing bulletin board materials, and decorating classroom; assist in maintaining a neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment.
Communicate all matters of importance to teachers and specialists; communicate important information to parents when so directed by the teacher.
Assist in assessing programs and materials to meet the needs of the children; collect, assemble and distribute learning materials, supplies, equipment, and other resource materials; order instructional material and aids when necessary.

English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Basic clerical procedures.

Basic child development theory and principles.
Basic techniques to motivate students and manage student behavior.
Safe work practices.
Skill to :Learn to operate equipment used as educational aids.
Operate modern office equipment including computers.
Ability to : Learn the procedures and functions necessary to perform assigned duties.
Learn instructional terminology, program philosophies, concepts, materials, methods, and procedures.
Learn child guidance principles and practices.
Effectively direct the work of individual students and groups of students.
Recognize problems which may interfere with learning of students or the physical/emotional welfare of students and implement appropriate solutions in the learning environment.
Recognize potential of students and encourage their participation in educational programs and activities.
Assist with the instructional and related activities of the assigned learning environment.
Support the assigned teacher's style of classroom management.
Supervise students according to approved policies and procedures.
Read, write, and understand the English language.
Perform clerical duties including filing and duplicating.
Maintain accurate records.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
Read and follow District rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Respond appropriately in emergency situations.
React to and exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward children.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Education & Experience Requirements Experience and Training Guidelines : Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience :Some experience in working with youth in an organized setting is desirable.
Training :Equivalent to a high school diploma. Additional specialized training in child development, education, or a related field is desirable.
License or Certificate :Possession of CPR and First Aid Certificates.
Special Requirements : Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to work in a classroom environment.
Selection ProcessThe examination process for this recruitment may be comprised of one or any combination of the following: screening of the applicant’s training, background, and experience; scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application; written examination(s); qualifications appraisal oral examination; performance examination; or technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis.
A background check will be conducted to all candidates that will be considered. There is a $74 fingerprint fee that the candidate is responsible for and a clearance of Tuberculosis is also required prior to beginning work.
