Position Description
Under direct supervision, the Firefighter Trainee participates in the intensive trainee academy which focuses on fire technology, prevention, public education, emergency response, fire suppression, search and rescue, emergency medical service, hazard mitigation, fitness and health, policies, procedures, and other response areas as assigned.
Firefighter Trainee is a non-sworn training classification in the firefighter series for candidates qualified to learn the duties of a Firefighter in the City of Fresno Fire Department. Incumbents of this class undergo a formal, comprehensive training program.
Upon satisfactory completion of the trainee academy, the Firefighter Trainee will become a Firefighter (Monthly salary $6,170 - $9,121). Failure to successfully complete the trainee academy will be cause for termination.
Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period up to a maximum of two (2) years at the City's discretion.
The Requirements

These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list.
TO QUALIFY, an applicant must possess:
A high school diploma or equivalent;
AND
Possession of a valid driver's license is required at time of application. Possession of a valid California driver's license is required within sixty (60) days of appointment.
AND
Possession and maintenance of a valid cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card consistent with the curriculum standards of the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or equivalent is required at time of application.
Applicants MUST attach copies of required certifications and licenses. Failure to attach documents will result in your application being deemed incomplete and may be rejected.
REQUIRED AT TIME OF THE FIRE CHIEF'S INTERVIEW:
Possession of an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certificate issued only by the State of California or by the National Registry or by an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic certifying agency approved by the State of California is required at the time of the Fire Chief's interview.
NOTE: Incumbents who possess a National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certificate will need to have a valid Central California Emergency Medical Services Agency Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certificate issued by the State of California and certified by the County of Fresno at the time of appointment to Firefighter.
Candidates who achieve placement on the eligible list and who proceed to the departmental interview will be required to supply verification of the above achievements/certifications at time of interview. Failure to supply the appropriate documentation may result in disqualification from the process.
Additional Requirements
As identified in the job bulletin, candidates are expected to successfully complete a physical agility test.
Eligible candidates certified to the Fire Department for consideration must successfully complete the Fire Chief's interview, polygraph test, and extensive background investigation before receiving a conditional offer of employment, which includes a comprehensive pre-employment physical examination, including testing for the presence of drugs and alcohol. Any falsification of information provided or any failure to meet the requirements will result in disqualification from further consideration in the selection process for Firefighter Trainee.
Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of appointment to Firefighter Trainee.
At the completion of the trainee academy, incumbents must possess and maintain at minimum a valid Class C California Driver's License with a firefighter endorsement. Incumbents may possess and maintain a valid Class A or B California Driver's license, without air brake restriction, and with tank endorsement. Failure to maintain the required driver's license may be cause for termination.
Candidates selected to fill Firefighter vacancies are prohibited from smoking or use of any tobacco product on-duty and on City premises.

Selection Process
The selection process may consist of the following parts:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 40% - The written examination is designed to assess the candidate's knowledge in the following areas: reading ability, mathematical reasoning, map reading, writing ability, human relations, reasoning skills, work styles or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Firefighter Trainee. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Written Examination to be invited to the Oral Examination.
The Written Examination has been tentatively scheduled for the week of: June 16, 2025
In the event that a large number of candidates pass the Written Examination, the City reserves the right to invite a limited number of the top scoring candidates plus ties to the Oral Examination.
ORAL EXAMINATION - 60% - A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related Oral Examination which may evaluate each candidate's knowledge in the following areas: ability to develop and maintain a strong work ethic and positive attitude, establish and maintain effective working relationships, perform prolonged and arduous tasks under adverse conditions and understand and follow written and oral instructions or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Firefighter Trainee. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Oral Examination to be invited to the Physical Agility Test.
The Oral Examination has been tentatively scheduled for the weeks of: June 30, 2025 - July 11, 2025
PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST- (Pass/Fail) - A Physical Agility Test, similar to Biddle, will be administered by the City of Fresno Fire Department and proctored by the City of Fresno Personnel Department. The test is timed and may consist of the following events and may be performed in a different order than listed: Dry Hose Deployment, Charged Hose Deployment, Halyard Raise, Roof Walk, Attic Crawl, Roof Ventilation, Victim Removal, Ladder Removal/Carry, Stair Climb with Hose, and Crawling Search/Stair Descent. Candidates must complete these events accurately, safely and under a specific time limit that will be identified in the test invitation to pass this examination section and achieve placement on the eligible list.
The Physical Agility Test has been tentatively scheduled for the week of August 4, 2025, with practice sessions available tentatively scheduled for the week of July 28, 2025.
Candidates must achieve a passing score on each part of the competitive process to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
Per Fresno Municipal Code Section 3-264, the appointing authority may select and request certification for appointment of the names of one or more eligibles on such list, without regard to their relative standing on the list.
Veteran Preference Regulations
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
