WHAT WE OFFER

• Educational Incentive: An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor's degree OR 5% for completion of a graduate degree.
• Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational needs and certification skills.
• Vacation Accrual: New regular, full-time employees shall accrue approximately 14 days of vacation a year for the first 10,400 hours or 5 years of service; vacation accruals increase at 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 20 years of service, topping out at 26 days a year.
• Vacation Redemption: After 14,560 hours of continuous service, an employee may elect to "cash in" or redeem up to 80 hours of vacation accrued in the same year after using 80 hours of vacation in the preceding 12 months.
• Sick Leave: Full-time Regular employees accrue 3.08 hours of sick leave per pay period.
• Deferred Compensation: Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
• Health Plans: Full-time employees are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans.
• Flexible Spending Accounts: Choice of participation in the Flexible Spending Accounts, which increase spending power through reimbursement of pre-tax dollars for IRS-approved dependent care and health care expenses.
• Pension Plan: Both the County and employees contribute to the County's Retirement Plan and to Social Security. If eligible, reciprocity may be established with other public retirement systems, such as CalPERS.
• Holidays: 12 paid days per year, which include a scheduled floating holiday.

Under supervision (I/II) and under direction (III), performs a variety of routine maintenance and construction tasks on Channel Islands Harbor facilities operating trucks, boats, and motorized equipment safely around water; and performs related work as required. The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more trades, such as electrical, plumbing, construction, plastering, masonry, flooring, or roofing.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

• Maintenance Worker I: $21.00 - $25.93 per hour
• Maintenance Worker II: $21.00 - $27.49 per hour
• Maintenance Worker III: $21.94 - $30.77 per hour

VETERANS' POINTS: The Maintenance Worker I/II are entry entry-level classifications, and Veterans' Points may apply to eligible applicants. Documentation of military service must be submitted prior to close of recruitment to receive points.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, the incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further exam upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Maintenance Worker I/II/III are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill present and future regular (including temporary and fixed-term), intermittent, and extra help vacancies for these and similar positions only. There is currently one (1) regular, full-time vacancy within the Harbor Department.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Builds, installs, and/or repairs facilities such as docks, dock boxes, walers, walkways and sidewalks, gangways, stairs, walls, buildings, fences, retaining walls, and barriers;
• Performs framing and installs siding and interior walls; does plastering, masonry work, wood, tile, and linoleum floor installations, roofing, and painting;
• Performs various types of skilled and semi-skilled tasks connected with the maintenance of grounds, such as plants, transplants, and maintains trees and shrubs; plants flowers and lawns; installs and maintains irrigation systems; fertilizes and applies herbicides, pesticides, etc.; maintains landscaped areas around buildings, and along roadways;
• Installs and repairs electrical and plumbing systems, and interior fixtures; installation of wiring under dock areas, repairing parking lot light fixtures requiring operation of hi-lift equipment and working from heights, and clearing plumbing lines;
• Operates and maintains a variety of motorized tools, equipment, and vehicles, including light trucks and boats, tractors, beach sanitizers, mowers, and high-lifts;
• May be required to perform a variety of other duties, such as making minor adjustments and repairs to tools.
• Cleans facilities, including public restrooms, performing tasks such as shoveling sand, mopping, sweeping, and stocking janitorial supplies; and
• Performs other related duties as required.

At the III Level:

• May perform on-site supervision of subordinate maintenance workers; train employees on specific projects, and inspect their work to ensure it is properly completed.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education, training and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can be obtained by one (1) year of experience for level I, two (2) years of experience for level II, and three (3) years for the level III in general construction, facilities maintenance, grounds maintenance, or landscape maintenance.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to work weekends and holidays as required
• Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver's license.
• Ability to perform strenuous manual labor involving physical strength, agility, and stamina.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to operate machinery, including a cherry picker, beach cleaner, tractor, and winch.
• Ability to work safely on uneven and unstable surfaces, performing work with gas and electrically powered equipment around water, such as floating docks, rock revetment, and beaches.
• Incumbents will be required to wear a uniform. (Sec. 613B Uniform allowance provided)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Some (I) to considerable (III) knowledge of:

• Use of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and construction trade, to include the knowledge of the proper operation of gas-powered equipment normally associated with maintenance and construction activities around water;
• Common plants, turf, trees, and their care;
• Use common landscaping and gardening tools and equipment;
• Perform plant care and construction activities;
• Safe work practices and procedures, including working with powered equipment around water and boats.

Some (I) to considerable (III) ability to:

• Perform welding, carpentry, electrical repairs, painting, plumbing, and cement work;
• Demonstrate physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform strenuous manual labor;
• Follow oral and written instructions;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

At the III level only:

• Ability to serve in a lead/on-site supervisor capacity and train others.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: An online, unproctored, job-related written examination will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating applicants' knowledge of tool use and care, maintenance principles, math, reading comprehension, public and employee relations, safety, and landscape maintenance. Examinees must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
