WHAT WE OFFERUnder supervision (I/II) and under direction (III), performs a variety of routine maintenance and construction tasks on Channel Islands Harbor facilities operating trucks, boats, and motorized equipment safely around water; and performs related work as required. The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more trades, such as electrical, plumbing, construction, plastering, masonry, flooring, or roofing.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:VETERANS' POINTS: The Maintenance Worker I/II are entry entry-level classifications, and Veterans' Points may apply to eligible applicants. Documentation of military service must be submitted prior to close of recruitment to receive points.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, the incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further exam upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Maintenance Worker I/II/III are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill present and future regular (including temporary and fixed-term), intermittent, and extra help vacancies for these and similar positions only. There is currently one (1) regular, full-time vacancy within the Harbor Department.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education, training and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can be obtained by one (1) year of experience for level I, two (2) years of experience for level II, and three (3) years for the level III in general construction, facilities maintenance, grounds maintenance, or landscape maintenance.

APPLICATION EVALUATION - qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether the stated requirements are met. Applicants meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the examination process.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: An online, unproctored, job-related written examination will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating applicants' knowledge of tool use and care, maintenance principles, math, reading comprehension, public and employee relations, safety, and landscape maintenance. Examinees must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A thorough pre-employment, post-offer background investigation, which may include inquiry into past employment, education, criminal background information, and driving record, may be required for this position.
