About the Opportunity

THE POSITION
The Crime Analyst is a single position classification in the Sheriff's Department Crime Analysis Unit. The Crime Analyst designs, monitors, enters, and updates all types of crime-related data. This individual also determines the statistical analysis techniques to be used on data and plans, evaluates, and participates in the analysis of crime data, and helps to disseminate this data to management, patrol, crime prevention, investigations, and other units. This individual is responsible for operating a computerized program that enables the Sheriff Department to coordinate and analyze crime data to effectively achieve departmental goals. The individual in this position is accountable for the unit's research techniques, system design and development, and information output. The Crime Analyst provides technical assistance regarding criminal statistical analysis work, data entry, and computer operations. This position is subject to overtime work and performs related duties as assigned.

Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.

Typical Tasks

• Plan, evaluate, and participate in the analysis of crime data;
• Query against case management databases to acquire crime data;
• Analyze crime data and preventative practices using predictive analytics software such as IBM SPSS;
• Develop and maintain crime analysis products, including exception reports, area crime evaluations, crime bulletins, crime potential and trend reports and other reports and correspondence;
• Maintain quality control on all data;
• Develop new manuals;
• Assist in the development of statistical programs to handle crime series analysis, and for coordinating future modifications and/or expansions for the department and other tasks as may be necessary to meet the goals of the department;
• Enter or supervise the entry of all crime-related data via computer terminal;
• Maintain liaison with interdepartmental and other agencies regarding crime data related issues;
• Train departmental and other personnel in program-related computer use and application;
• Assist in information flow between the Crime Analysis Unit and user groups;
• Design mathematical and statistical models for research projects; selects and adapts statistical and analytical methods;
• Define population and/or data base to be surveyed; selects existing source references;
• Develop data collection forms and procedures; reviews technical literature relating to program under consideration;
• Instruct program staff in data collection methods and use of questionnaires;
• May personally participate in collecting, compiling and tabulating field data;
• Analyze data and perform calculations; plan and develop report content and format or assist in such work;
• Provide Real Time Live Assist;
• May participate in developing supporting computer systems; and
• May have to testify in court in criminal and civil cases.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
PATTERN I

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Mathematics, or a related field; AND
• Two (2) years of administrative and/or analytical experience that demonstrates possession of the stated abilities and knowledge. One (1) year must have been in statistical analysis and/or in the criminal, behavioral or social science fields.

PATTERN II

• Four (4) years of administrative and/or analytical experience that demonstrates possession of the stated abilities and knowledge. One (1) year must have been in statistical analysis and/or in the criminal, behavioral or social science fields.
  

NOTE: No felony convictions. Must be of good moral character and must not have been convicted of a crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment in a Federal penitentiary or State prison.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Two (2) years of paid, full-time experience working in a law enforcement setting in either a sworn or non-sworn capacity.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
