Essential Job FunctionsDiagnoses problems with elevators, escalators, and dumbwaiters and determines appropriate and safe plans for repair.
Tests and adjusts general operating and safety features of elevators, escalators, and dumbwaiters, such as speed, acceleration, leveling, braking, emergency stop, and alarm bell.
Inspects, adjusts, maintains, and repairs electronic control panels, switches, relays, signal devices, electric motors, generators, hoist motors and machinery, governors, door mechanisms, cables, hydraulic buffers, pumps, brakes, rails, guides and related equipment.
Interacts in person, telephonically, and via electronic messaging with coworkers in sharing work information, ordering parts and supplies, advising of work progress, and coordinating assistance needed for the completion of work.
Maintains work records.
Maintains tools and equipment.
Drives a motor vehicle to and from work sites.
Supervises trainees and helpers, as required.

Requirements REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY OPTION I Completion of a recognized elevator mechanic training program* of at least four years' duration.
OPTION II Five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of elevators or escalators, one year of which
MUST have been at the journey level**.
VISION: Keen color perception.
LICENSEA valid California Class C Driver License*** is required at the time of appointment to perform job-related responsibilities. Those who currently have an out-of-state driver license are also required to obtain the California Class C Driver License before appointment.
LICENSE INFORMATION ***You will be required to acquire a copy of your driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked.
AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED. CERTIFICATE A valid Los Angeles City Certificate of Registration as a Journey Elevator Mechanic*.
Effective June 30, 2003, certification, temporary certification, or emergency certification by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health, as a Certified Competent Conveyance (elevator) Mechanic (CCCM)*.
A City of Los Angeles Regulation 4 Certificate may be required for testing Life/Safety systems in County buildings located within the city limits of Los Angeles. Life/Safety systems are defined as: fire alarms, automatic-closing fire assemblies, elevator recall, fire suppression, and emergency power systems.
PHYSICAL CLASSPhysical Class III -- Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION *In order to receive credit for the required certificate of completion of a recognized Elevator Mechanic training program and certifications, you
MUST include a legible copy of the certificates at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing. Please submit documentation to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org a nd indicate your name, the exam name, and the exam number. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.
Training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private, Postsecondary, and Vocational Education.
**Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Credit will be given to applicants who possess
DESIRABLE qualifications and indicate so on their employment application at the time of filing.
Experience beyond the requirements in the maintenance and repair of
elevators -AND- escalators at the journey level**.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The supplemental questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of disqualification in order to reapply.
Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%.
APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER. VETERAN'S CREDITIf you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to the exam analyst at sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org within seven (7) calendar days from applying.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS. The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Administrative Services Division, Facilities Services Bureau.
SPECIAL INFORMATION SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at-fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIREDThe Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a
"zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
- use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
AVAILABLE SHFT Day Shift
WORK CONDITIONS The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) operates seven (7) days a week, 24-hours a day, and has locations throughout the greater Los Angeles County. Appointees
MUST be willing to:
- work any shift
- be on-call and respond to and make emergency elevator repairs
- work holidays and weekends
- work and drive to any Sheriff's facility location within the County of Los Angeles
- work within a jail facility where there are inmates present
