Description
Job SummaryThe Recreation Assistant to the Center Supervisor plays a dual role in supporting the operations of the Center for Arts & Crafts. This position is responsible for coordinating aspects of pottery programming, including: kiln operations; equipment maintenance; and instructional support, while assisting with arts programming and community events. This role involves assisting with pottery instructors in a leadership role and ensuring a safe, creative, and welcoming environment for participants. The position also provides administrative, instructional, and facility support to the Center Supervisor, helping to deliver engaging and accessible arts experiences for the community.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Examples of DutiesPottery Coordinator Duties include, but are not limited to: - Supervise pottery kilns: check regularly 3-5 times a week loading/unloading; conduct kiln firings, ensuring that pottery class firings remain on schedule
- Perform routine maintenance of kilns, pottery wheels, pug mill, & traps in pottery classrooms
- Use a pug mill to reclaim clay
- Aid in equipment maintenance, research, and in contacting the manufacturer to order replacement parts as needed.
- Maintain pottery logs and material inventory
- Maintain MSDS labels & chemical information
- Mix glazes
- Recommend program enhancements to ensure that pottery member and patron needs are being met
- Ability to teach pottery at all levels (beginner to advanced classes)
Assistant duties include, but are not limited to: - Assist with the implementation and evaluation of programs, including summer camps.
- Assist with supervision of participants, facility attendants, and art instructor staff.
- Assist with art class & facility coverage as needed.
- Answer telephone, provide the public with needed information, take registration and reservations, and collect program fees.
- Promote Center for Arts & Crafts center, events, & programs through speaking engagements.
- Assist in the requisition and inventory of supplies and materials.
- Assist in the preparation of publicity materials and in publicizing events.
- Prepare reports of center utilization.
- Lock and unlock the center as needed.
- Responsible for adhering to all safety policies and procedures of the department.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: - A bachelor's degree in Fine Art with a concentration in Ceramics or a closely related field; and
- One year of recreation or related experience
- Prior experience loading and firing kilns is required
Preferred experience but not required: - Two years of comparable experience as a pottery studio manager
- CPR and First Aid/AED Certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire)
- Previous experience working with youth and adults
- Prior pottery teaching experience
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: - Principles, practices, and techniques of applicable administration.
- Customer service techniques.
- Policies and regulations affecting the operation of a pottery studio and art center.
Skill in: - First Aid and CPR.
- Using pottery tools and equipment, and other art-related materials
Ability to: - Assist in planning, organizing, and supervising various art activities.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Operate assigned office equipment, including computer equipment and various software packages.
- Operate pottery equipment, including pottery wheels, kilns, pug mill, and other various pottery-related items.
- Meet the mental and physical demands of the position.
- Work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public.
Special Requirements- Must possess and maintain a valid, current North Carolina driver's license that is not revoked, suspended, or subject to limited restoration or conditional operation privileges and acceptable driving record.
- Must possess (or obtain within 90 days of hire) and maintain valid Red Cross First Aid and CPR, and AED certifications.
- Applicants should have examples of personal artwork available for review.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
