As an intern with the Facilities Operations team, you will have the opportunity to build for a stronger tomorrow by applying your diverse background, education, and work experiences to the planning, installation, and maintenance of the landscape and grounds surrounding the Missouri State Capitol, Governor’s Mansion, and other areas of public interest within the Capitol Complex.

The internship schedule is flexible at 20-40 hours per week.
This position is with the Office of Administration Division of Facilities Management, Design, and Construction’s (OA-FMDC) Facilities Operations team, supporting the Central Region Capitol Complex Grounds Crew. - Prioritize excellent customer service for a wide and diverse network of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to internal teams, state agencies, state officials, contractors, and the public.
- Assist the Capitol Complex Grounds Crew in daily operations of landscape and grounds management, restoration, and maintenance in the Central Region.
- Assist with daily maintenance and performing work orders in the Central Region.
- Shadow and assist with installations, repairs, and maintenance, as well as preventative and corrective work orders.
- Provide support in performing inspections, diagnosing issues, and recommending solutions.
- Contribute to designing, constructing, and maintaining beautiful lawns through planting, fertilization, weed control, insect control, and disease management.
- Service and repair irrigation systems, ensuring the health and vitality of our landscapes.
- Help maintain inventory, workspaces, machinery, and equipment.
- Participate in hands-on technical work to expand your knowledge of landscaping and horticulture systems best practices.
- Help create stunning outdoor living spaces that enhance our state-owned properties.
- Ability to communicate, collaborate, and lead with integrity in a manner that inspires trust and builds positive rapport with a diverse group of stakeholders and the public.
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program or in a technical or vocational college.
- General knowledge of landscaping and grounds management, safety practices, and methods.
- Excellent attendance, work ethic, attention to detail, conflict management, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to operate gas- and hand-powered lawn maintenance tools and equipment such as mowing machinery, tractors, and other motorized equipment.
- Ability to properly lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from Missouri or from an adjacent state if you reside outside of Missouri.
Preferred Field(s) of Study - Facilities Management and Operations;
- Landscape Management;
- Turf/Grounds Management;
- Horticulture;
- Plant Sciences;
- Forestry;
- Agriculture; or
- Another related field.

Authorization to work in the United States is a prerequisite of employment. The Office of Administration will not sponsor applicants for work visas. The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the individual selected or the position is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., shift, security, or years of service), it will be added to the total compensation in your paycheck. A pay differential does not raise your base pay.
*This position is physically demanding. Examples of job duties may include prolonged periods of walking/standing/sitting/bending/driving, climbing ladders, ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, working in inclement weather and working on uneven or elevated surfaces. This list is not all inclusive, but a general representation of duties that may be encountered in this position, however other duties may be assigned contingent upon business needs. Please note, this position is considered a “Category 2” under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), meaning the incumbent will be compensated for overtime (hours actually worked over forty hours in a workweek) at the rate of time and one-half.
